Recovery Living Community (RLC)

Picture
Click Here to Apply For the RLC for 2019-2020

The Recovery Living Community (RLC) will be an apartment in the University-owned Santa Ynez apartments, open to UCSB students.

The apartment will have 4 or 5 residents who are committed to a substance-free lifestyle (either identifying as people in recovery or recovery allies who are abstinent). Residents will sign a commitment contract agreeing to uphold the values of the community, and will sign a one-year housing lease.

The RLC is not a "sober living" and does not include drug testing, monitoring, or treatment. There will be a live-in Recovery Peer Mentor, who is also a student, who will hold regular community meetings and be available as a peer resource. This community is designed for those students who are established in their recovery and want to live in a safe, supportive environment with other like-minded students.

RLC residents will be expected to be active participants in the Gauchos for Recovery program while they are living in the RLC.

Housing rates are very reasonable and can be found here (look for "Santa Ynez apartments"):
https://www.housing.ucsb.edu/rates

Rates include 24-hour internet access, housing staff on premises, and 24 hour on-call maintenance and emergency staff.

Students must apply for the RLC through Angie Bryan, Recovery Program Manager and should not go directly to UCSB Housing.

Priority Deadline: April 30th

RLC Commitment Contract

Those wishing to apply for the RLC must be willing to sign a commitment contract agreeing to the following community guidelines.

GFR Recovery Living Community (RLC)
Community Guidelines

The purpose of the RLC is to provide a safe, supportive living environment for students who have chosen not to use alcohol and other drugs.
RLC resident requirements are as follows:
  1. RLC residents must be active participants in the Gauchos for Recovery student organization, and must maintain this participation throughout the year. This includes attendance at all GFR organization meetings.
  2. Alcohol and other Drugs (with the exception of medications prescribed by a physician, kept in original packaging, and taken as directed) will not be possessed, consumed, or used in the RLC.
  3. RLC residents will not bring or assist others in bringing alcohol or other drugs into the apartment or come into the apartment while under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.
  4. All RLC guests must follow community requirements and residents are responsible for the behavior of their guests.
  5. Attendance at house meetings is required.
  6. Residents will not conceal another’s use of addictive substances and will report that activity to the live-in Recovery Peer Intern or Recovery Program Manager.
  7. Residents must adhere to all UCSB Housing & Residence Life policies at all times, as outlined in the University Apartments Occupancy Agreement. RLC residents violating Housing policies will be required to meet with the live-in Recovery Peer Intern and/or the Recovery Program Manager, in addition to housing staff.
  8. Residents must adhere to the UCSB Student Conduct Code as outlined in the Campus Regulations Applying to Campus Activities, Organizations, and Students. RLC residents violating the Student Conduct Code will be required to meet with the live-in Recovery Peer Intern and/or the Recovery Program Manager, in addition to Judicial Affairs staff.

Should there be a recurrence of use of addictive substances by an RLC resident, a meeting will be held with the live-in Recovery Peer Intern and the Recovery Program Manager to determine next steps. These steps may include: implementing a recovery protection plan, required participation in counseling at the Alcohol & Drug Program, or other supportive/educational measures. It may also include referral to Housing Judicial Affairs, reassignment to another on-campus residence, or contract termination. Other sanctions may be determined by the Recovery Program Manager and/or Housing staff.

In situations where there is a need for immediate action to alleviate concerns for safety, to help ensure the well-being of RLC residents, the Recovery Program Manager in coordination with Housing staff may assign appropriate interim actions, which could include reassignment or contract termination.
