UC Recovery Leadership Retreat

January 19-20, 2019
UC Santa Barbara

About The Retreat

The UC Recovery Leadership Retreat brings together students and staff from campuses across the University of California system. The goal of the retreat is to foster relationships, share challenges and successes, brainstorm ideas, and learn from leaders in the field of collegiate recovery. All of this is to support our overall goal of establishing successful and sustainable collegiate recovery programs at every UC campus.

Our last retreat attracted about 40 participants from all 10 campuses. We were joined by distinguished guests, including members of the national board for the Association of Recovery in Higher Education, Taisha Caldwell, the Mental Health Program Manager for the UC Office of the President, and Kristen Harper, the Technical Assistance Coordinator for Transforming Youth Recovery. Guests for the upcoming retreat will be announced very soon.

What is Collegiate Recovery?
A collegiate recovery program (CRP) is a supportive environment within the campus culture that reinforces the decision to disengage from addictive behavior. It is designed to provide an educational opportunity alongside recovery support to ensure that students do not have to sacrifice one for the other.

Students and Staff Advisors can attend for free.

Benjamin Fucanan
Benji is VP of Business Development for Pillars Recovery in Orange County, and is a person in recovery from addiction. After graduating from Chico State University at the top of his class, Benji went on to work for MTV and shortly after started his own Yoga studio. Between the years of 2010-2011, Benji went from successful business owner to losing everything while in the grip of active addiction. Benji found himself homeless, jobless, and penniless. Sadly, in 2014, Benji attempted suicide. To Benji, he succeeded, but he was granted a second chance at life. Today, having found his faith and recovery, Benji lives a life of purpose through his outreach, passion, and excitement for life.
Many would agree that Benji's personal journey with recovery has given him crucial insight into the causes, consequences and process of recovery from addiction.

Tim Rabolt
Tim Rabolt is the Executive Director for the Association of Recovery in Higher Education (ARHE). In his role with ARHE, Tim oversees the national conference, membership and external relations, and work with collegiate recovery stakeholders across the country. Tim graduated from The George Washington University in 2015 with his Bachelor's in Business Administration, and in 2017 with his Master's of Arts in Education and Human Development. He's been in recovery since April of 2011 during his senior year of high school in Wilmington, DE. He currently resides in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
